The Honda RC211V was developed in 2001 by the competition department of Honda - HRC - to replace the Honda NSR500; due to drastic changes in the rules of world motorcycling championship for the season [[2002]. The rules changed; limits for engines 500cc two-stroke and four-cylinder remained; but four-stroke engines were allowed to reach 990 cc three to four cylinders. This change paa class renamed MotoGP prototypes and limited to racing. This motorcycle was the first four-stroke motorcycle in the world championship speed.
